Game Design Doc:
My game is centered around the player who is the main character of the story as well as an undercover cop. He dresses as if he is a gangster but really doesn’t look like he fits in. I want the game to have a more modern twist on it although I have come to find that it is rather hard to do since the starter kit already has a fantasy aspect to it. I started off by changing the main characters look to put him in modern clothes and then proceeded to modify the weapons that are used in the game. I gave the character modern weapons replacing the sword with a bloody kitchen knife to fit the gang them. I then replaced the bow with a shotgun and the wand with a pistol. In the blacksmith you will see that the prices have dramatically increased due to the modernization. The gems have also been transformed into stacks of cash that the enemy gang members will drop. I wanted to make a sort of retro looking Grand Theft Auto type game and I used Retro City rampage as a source of inspiration.
I wanted to modify some of the mechanics of the game as well, I plan on using an ammo system where players will only have a certain amount of bullets for their guns and it will cost them money in order to keep they stocked with ammo. I also want to mod some of the monsters or enemies to be able to shoot as well and maybe add another level of difficulty to the game. Right now it seems the game would be too easy if the enemies can only hurt you by running into you and I feel that it would be broken if you over splice the enemies in the areas where they are designated to be in.
As for the story of my game. Right now it is following this lead of doing various quests around the town in order to progress through the story. If you go around the town and talk to the citizens each will give you hints of things to do. For example, some will tell you that you need a certain amount of money to get passed the guard that guards the west ghetto. So if you try to go there you will find out whether that is true and how much money you actually do need to enter. Also I have added several areas in which players can explore such as a police station which has been overrun by thugs and a girl trapped inside. If she is rescued she will reveal to you that there is a key somewhere in the game that allows you to travel to the underground cellars of the station. So know you have to find a key, could it be in the west Ghetto? Who is leading all of these gangsters? Maybe she knows something about the key. All of these dialogues between the character and the npc’s will help the player progress through the story. In the end I want to have a boss battle as a final hurrah for the game.
