Wk01 2D RPG Research Proposal

Hey everyone, back for a second blog for a second semester. We will be starting out getting used to the new engines that we will be working with to create all sorts of cool games, that won't require full teams of people. To begin, I have to start to develop a new idea for a 2D RPG game that I will be making and start brainstorming what direction I might want to take the game in. For those who don't know, a 2D RPG game is something like this...

The image is of an old link game, but this will be kind of what I will be working towards with the overall art side and mechanics of the game. I do, however, want to change the whole scenario of the game. I, for one, am not a huge fan of old time games where it is swords and bow and arrows, so I am looking to possible change the time period my game with be set in to maybe a more recent time or even a retro time from the standard of today. I want to keep basic mechanics maybe just replace the bow and arrow with a gun, and say the sword with melee weapons such as a knife, a bat, pipe, etc. I believe that this will create new ally ways for me to go down since most RPG's follow the same sort of combinations of a trader and such things, I could use a black market, etc and probably create some pretty cool NPC characters from that. Depending on what we actually do with the game maker I will determine how my levels will play out and how I want the overall gameplay to be, whether you just go around slashing monsters or if there is an actual storyline and objective to my game. Here is something I was thinking of just to base my game on. Let me know what you think.
